Departing sportswriter still sold on women’s hoops

After returning from the Final Four, Michelle Smith bids farewell to a 14-year stint with the San Francisco Chronicle.

She has taken a buyout at a paper threatened with closure if drastic staff cuts weren’t made.

Another new member of a growing tribe. Writers who cover the sport for some time find it habit-forming, and I’m hoping Michelle will try to find a way to continue.

Welcome to the club, and best wishes.

  1. We are Bay Area Readers of the SF Chron, the newspaper Michelle Smith wrote for, and will miss her reporting. It is scary to think the paper will not hire someone to take her place to write about the two powerhouse women’s college basketball teams, Stanford and Cal. How can you generate interest if no one is writing about women’s basketball?
